McLees Lake Fish Weir
Kanesia and Tyler are almost fish tight as they put down the last few weights for the weir.
In 2020, QTU worked side by side with our partners at Alaska Department of Fish and Game to ready a field site and structures, and install a weir to count sockeye salmon returning to McLees Lake through Reese Bay. Working together, the team had the weir installed and fish tight on June 8. Our staff returned later in the season to get hands-on experience with counting salmon and sampling scales for future analysis..
We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with ADFG, working together to understanding this importance subsistence resource.
Scale analysis can provide scientists valuable information about the age and time spent in freshwater vs. saltwater.
