McLees Lake Fish Weir

Kanesia & Tyler

Kanesia and Tyler are almost fish tight as they put down the last few weights for the weir.

Qawalangin Tribe staff are working side by side with our partners at Alaska Department of Fish and Game to maintain a field site and structures, and install a weir to count sockeye salmon returning to McLees Lake through Reese Bay. The field crew will be monitoring numbers of fish, sampling scales and completing some mark and recapture work in 2022.

We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with ADFG, working together to understanding this importance subsistence resource.

Scale analysis can provide scientists valuable information about the age and time spent in freshwater vs. saltwater.
